Try a Jelly Coconut like a Local … This is so Jamaican
When you go to Jamaica ask for a green coconut (called Jellies) in any market or fruit stand. The vendor will use a machete to cut off the top of the coconut. You can use a straw to drink the clear liquid inside; but, you should drink it the way locals do. Put the opening of the coconut to your mouth, tilt your head back and take a long cool draught. The taste is indescribable but it is unusually refreshing especially on a hot day.

After you have drunk the coconut water, ask them to split the coconut open for you. You can either use a spoon or they will give you a piece of the coconut husk to use as a spoon. Using a scraping motion, scoop out the white flesh of the coconut. The consistency depends on the age of the coconut – the older the coconut, the firmer the flesh. I prefer the younger coconuts since the flesh is softer and dissolves in your mouth. Go ahead – try something different. You may surprise yourself!
Til next time. Think and dream Jamaica!
