We’re pretty excited! We had the absolute pleasure of being interviewed by one of the top, if not THE top, vacation rental gurus in the world, Matt Landau, for the final episode of his podcast, Unlocked, where we delved into our experience running a vacation rental in Jamaica from afar.
To say it was an honor is an understatement.
Matt is the founder of the official Vacation Rental Marketing Blog (VRMB). He is an ardent supporter of the belief that vacation rentals, done well, are the future of the hospitality industry.
He has championed the need for vacation rental owners to be independent of the big listing sites, like AirBnB, VRBO, and Booking.com – a feat that is only doable for the most determined and serious of vacation rental owners.
So what did we talk about?
We’ve learned a lot over 20 years and have had to pivot on more than one occasion. On one hand, it might seem like it would be easy to run one property but on the other hand, certain things that should or could be scaled or simply aren’t possible.
We also talked about hiring and supervising employees when you’re located hundreds of miles away, leveraging a vacation home that’s not beachfront in a beach destination, the exponential power of procedures in a remote hospitality business, and a whole lot more.
Who should listen?
If you think running a vacation rental means that you clean out your spare room or just move out of your house for a week and sign up with Airbnb or if you think it is just glamorous and easy to run a vacation rental, especially a vacation rental in Jamaica, then you should listen.
You will realize it isn’t an easy task, not if you take the guest experience seriously. More importantly, you will realize that there are professional owners out there and you should be sure to book your next vacation rental from one of them.
Why do we do what we do?
Listen to the podcast and you will understand what we do, how we do it, and why we do it. It’s no piece of cake to run a vacation rental in Jamaica from afar.
Our goal from day one has been to introduce guests to a Jamaica that was more than the all-inclusives, more than sun, sea, and sand, or rum, rasta, and reggae.
As a result, we go to great pains to focus on the guest experience and to preserve the soul of the place. The answer always comes back to one thing: creating the best guest experience that we can, one that we would want for ourselves and our family.
