Does Jamaica have the four seasons?

Unlike North America, Jamaica doesn’t have four distinct weather seasons.

We don’t see the shedding of leaves in the fall, and you won’t find snow (though there has been frost on the Blue Mountains). In fact, if temperatures drop below 70°F, that’s considered a major cold front!

Instead, we enjoy year-round warmth, punctuated by different “times” such as mango time, lobster time, or conch time referring to the availability of mango, lobster, and conch respectively.

Jamaica’s Climate

Jamaica’s weather remains consistently warm year-round, with average annual temperatures between 77°F (25°C) and 88°F (31°C).

Coastal areas benefit from refreshing sea breezes, while mountainous inland regions can get chilly in the early mornings, especially before the sun rises.

Jamaica’s Weather Patterns and What to Expect Month by Month

Best Time to Travel to Jamaica - Dry Season versus Wet or Rainy Season: Which Is Better?

We don’t track the seasons like our northern neighbors.

In Jamaica, the term “season” often refers to foods or fruits in their prime, such as mango time in the summer or orange time in the cooler months.

Or, we may talk about high and low season as it relates to tourist travel patterns.

That said, we unofficially recognize two main weather patterns: the dry season (November to April) and the wet or rainy season (May to October).

Thanks to climate change, the seasons aren’t as clearly defined as they were years ago but in a relative sense, there is still a dry and a rainy season, although July and August can be relatively dry.

Dry Season (November to April)

The dry season is Jamaica’s peak travel time, with cooler temperatures and minimal rain. If you’re planning a beach holiday or exploring Jamaica’s outdoor attractions, this is the best time to travel to Jamaica. However, prices are generally higher, and popular tourist spots can get crowded.

  • Pros: Great weather, sunny days, and perfect conditions for outdoor activities.
  • Cons: Higher accommodation rates and busier tourist areas.

Rainy Season (May to October)

The rainy season coincides with tourism’s low season which runs from April 16 – December 14. (Read our blog post, Is low season the best time to visit Jamaica.

Although the wet or rainy season brings more rain, it doesn’t usually last all day. The amount of rain does depend on where you are on the island. North-eastern Jamaica gets a lot more rain than North-western Jamaica which gets more than the South Coast.

Rain showers are brief and followed by sunny skies, which means you can still enjoy outdoor activities.

Although August is in the rainy season, there have been periods of drought sometimes.

While Jamaica’s hurricane season falls within this period (June to November), hurricanes are rare, and most days are still sunny with occasional rain.

  • Pros: Lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and more affordable accommodation.
  • Cons: More rain and potential for hurricanes, though rare.
