Happy First Day of Spring
Today is officially the first day of Spring! It’s the time where, in the US, the daffodils and the tulips start coming into bloom.
The Jamaican in me makes me not relate to the official dates for the beginning of each season.
We don’t have the four seasons the way many of our guests do. We have mango season, which is basically Summer. We don’t even worry about rainy season or hurricane season. We don’t go looking for problems. We know mango season. That’s the important season. Outside of that, we take each day as it comes – except if the temperature drops below 70 degrees. That’s a major cold front and would be equivalent to winter landing on us. We just can’t handle it.
Nevertheless, the calendar tells me that today is the first day of Spring. This reminds me of my absolute favorite poems that we learned in elementary school – Nature by H. D. Carberry.
Just typing this post is making me nostalgic and proud. I can almost hear the sound of Jamaican school children reciting this poem in speech competitions around the island.
I am so grateful for the beauty that is Jamaica. We don’t have the seasons, and that is perfectly fine. What we have instead is just as beautiful and fills us with tremendous joy.
I hope you enjoy this poem as much as I do.
Here’s to H.D. Carberry!
Nature by H. D. Carberry
We have neither Summer nor Winter
Neither Autumn nor Spring.
We have instead the days
When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields – Magnificently.
The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs
And there is no sound but the swish of water in the gullies
And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds.
Also there are the days when leaves fade from of off guango trees
And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun.
But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom
When bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey,
When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air,
When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars
And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.
So, did you like the poem?
Doesn’t it make you want to go and experience that Jamaica?
Imagine hearing the sound of rain on the rooftops ensuring a good night’s sleep. I remember the smell of burnt cut sugarcane. And yes, the buttercups, I remember the buttercups …
Share your thoughts in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.
Think and dream Jamaica!
Til next time,
