7 Jamaican Teas You Should Try …. Except for Maybe #2

Set up for tea at Mais Oui Villa in Jamaica

Jamaicans call almost any hot drink “tea”. It doesn’t matter whether it is coffee, hot chocolate, or hot milk.

The question asked by Jamaican mothers and grandmothers, “Did you drink your tea?”, means “Did you have a hot drink this morning?”

For the sake of your sanity, make sure your answer is “Yes”, otherwise you will never hear the end of it.

7 Popular Jamaican Teas

Listed in no particular order are seven of the most popular Jamaican teas.

1. Mint tea

This is sort of a family of teas which include peppermint, spearmint, black mint, and garden mint. This is a very common breakfast tea and is also used for almost any feeling of unwell such as headache or stomach aches.

2. Cerasee tea

This is the tea that every child dreads. It is a bitter tea which Jamaican grandmothers believe to be a good cleanser for the body.

3. Chocolate tea

This is an old-fashioned all-natural chocolate drink made from boiling grated cocoa and sweetened with milk.

4. Fever grass tea

Also known as lemon grass, this tea is thought of like chamomile tea as it is associated with relaxation and relieving insomnia. The essential oil is the most popular scent used in spas in Jamaica. Fever grass is also used for reducing fever and cold symptoms.

5. Orange or lime leaf tea

Boiling the leaves from orange or lime trees produces a very mellow, citrusy tea that is very relaxing.

6. Sour sop leaf tea

This is made by boiling the leaves of the soursop tree. Jamaicans believe that it calms the nerves and relieves anxiety.

7. Ginger tea

This is made by boiling the crushed root of the ginger plant. This helps with nausea and intestinal complaints.

Tea is now big business in Jamaica with many of these traditional herbals teas are now available for purchase in supermarkets around the world.

See which of these you can find in the tea aisle of your favorite supermarket. Try it and let me know what you think.

(In case you were wondering, our family’s favorite is lemon grass!)
