Tennis in Jamaica – Why Jamaica is Great for Tennis

Tennis in Jamaica – The One Time You Don’t Want One Love

Do you love tennis? Have you been thinking about playing tennis in Jamaica on your vacation? If so read on to see why Jamaica is good for tennis.  See some ideas for how you can create the best tennis experience possible.

In Jamaica, where the theme song is Bob Marley’s One Love, we just don’t get how “love” in tennis could be associated with losing.

So why is zero in tennis called “love”.

As it turns out, assuming Wikipedia is a reliable enough source, the most likely reason is that the word “love” comes from the French word “l’oeuf”, meaning egg which symbolizes nothing or zero. I guess saying “love” sounds kinder.

But, I digress, lol.

With the warm weather year round, Jamaica is a great location for tennis.

Tennis is not a huge sport in Jamaica although the Jamaica Tennis Federation is working to change that.

The Williams sisters have done camps for tennis in Jamaica. Richard Russell, former Wimbledon player is very involved in the local tennis scene and has a goal of exposing thousands of young Jamaicans to the sport. There are good players on the island but they don’t really have the opportunity to play competitively very much.

For locals, there aren’t too many places to go play tennis for free. There are a few tennis clubs but of course, you would have to be a member or pay a fee to play.

Dustin Brown, a Jamaican-German is hot on the tennis scene. He is making quite a name for himself and is quite a role model for many youngsters here on the island.

Which area is great for tennis in Jamaica?

No particular area of Jamaica is better for tennis than another.

For locals, there are more opportunities in Kingston and Montego Bay because these are bigger cities and so can support tennis clubs or sports clubs.

As a tourist, it depends on what you are looking for for your tennis vacation.

If you are looking for the creme de la creme, then Half Moon and Tryall in the Montego Bay have well-established tennis programs. Half Moon has 13 courts. Tryall has nine.

For the average casual tennis player, realize that many hotels have tennis courts. Some are lighted for play at night and others are not. Many have a tennis pro on-site, or at least on call, who can give lessons by appointment.

Do most hotels in Jamaica have tennis courts?

Many do.

Jewel Runaway Bay, 15 minutes from Mais Oui Villa has four tennis courts. Melia Braco, 5 minutes east of the villa has courts as well but Jewel’s are better.

Do not, however, assume that your hotel will have a tennis court.

If tennis is important to you during your vacation in Jamaica, then ask about the courts. Some basic questions to ask include how many courts do they have, what type of courts are they, are they lit for nighttime play, is there a pro, is there an extra cost with playing, are racquets and balls provided?

If you are not staying at a property that has tennis courts, you could go over to one of the all-inclusive hotels; however, they will charge you a day pass to access the property to play tennis. Non-all inclusive hotels will usually charge a per hour fee for use of their courts. Expect to pay between $30 and $60 per hour for lessons depending on the hotel and the coach.

So, if you want to play tennis in Jamaica, either book a place with tennis courts or visit a different property with tennis courts for a fee.

A few villas have their own tennis courts in Jamaica. Villas with tennis courts will naturally cost more than those without.

Where should you stay if you want to play tennis in Jamaica?

If you want to play tennis every day and not worry about waiting in line or signing up for court time, then rent a villa with a tennis court.

If you want to play tennis and get lessons, pick a hotel with an established tennis camp or program. Or, you could hire a coach to come to your villa.

Do you have to bring your racquet and balls with you?

If you are picky about your racquets and balls, bring them with you. They generally don’t take up much space and you will probably feel more comfortable with your own gear. Racquets and balls are imported onto the island so availability and quality may not always be what you would expect.
